'ROSA' delivers better customization of prostheses

The story

Since October, orthopedic surgeons Dr. Harbh, Dr. Depaepe and Dr. Moens from the AZ Jan Palfijn Ghent have been using the surgical robot 'ROSA' for all knee prostheses. The doctors are of course responsible for every decision they make and every action they take. During the procedure, the robot continuously provides information, feedback and instructions during the steps of the operation.

The robot allows us to work even more tailor-made to the patient.
There is no 'average body shape' or an 'average knee' on the operating table. With the help of the robot, the prosthesis can better fit the unique anatomy of each patient.

For example, in the past, a '0-leg' was straightened during the knee prosthesis procedure.
However, this does not always feel natural for the patient. With the robot we can decide to put the leg back into the position it was before the osteoarthritis and have the prosthesis fit perfectly anatomically.

High accuracy and continuous feedback:

In addition to higher customization for the individual patient, the robot also provides continuous feedback on the accuracy of placement during the procedure. The surgeon can make adjustments based on the data.

'ROSA' consists of 2 components. One part functions as a navigation system and continuously records the exact position of the leg of the knee to be operated on in three-dimensional space.

The second part is a robotic arm controlled by the surgeon.
This robotic arm guides the surgeon to remove tissue and bone during the placement of the knee prosthesis.

Only benefits for the patient:

Thanks to 'ROSA', orthopedists can measure the tension of the ligaments before making final decisions and can predict the end result in advance when planning the placement of the prosthesis. In the past, orthopedic surgeons relied on their experience during the procedure, but now they can measure their experience with exact values ​​and adjust preoperatively. For example, the robot tells us exactly how many millimeters of play a knee has.
